Your first priority is usually the skill and credentials of the surgeon.

Gary Alter, M.D. is one of the rare doctors (only a handful in the United States), who is certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Urology. He specializes in genital reconstruction and facial and body surgery for transgender patients. He has extensive experience in genital surgery including genital reassignment.

The office

The office is located at 416 North Bedford Drive in the heart of Beverly Hills, approximately 30 minutes from the Los Angeles International Airport. Access to the office is very easy, and Beverly Hills obviously offers a wide range of hotels, shopping, and sightseeing.

Zena is the patient coordinator, who will deal directly with you to answer general questions, schedule appointments and surgery, and assist in travel arrangements. She has been working in plastic surgery for 15 years and understands the myriad of operations and options available to you. She has worked with transgender patients for years and understands their particular needs and desires.

Olympia Hospital

Olympia Hospital is a fully accredited 200 bed hospital located adjacent to Beverly Hills, California. Each patient undergoing Gender Confirmation Surgery (GCS) will have a private room in this modern comfortable hospital. The staff is very familiar with transsexual patients, so you can be at ease with them. They are used to caring for a wide range of patients including celebrities, politicians, and royalty, so your privacy will be assured.

The Summit Surgical Center

The Summit Surgical Center is a fully accredited facility located within my office. This surgical center is used for secondary genital surgery and most cosmetic procedures that can be performed as an outpatient. The highly professional, friendly staff is also very experienced caring for transgender patients. Board Certified anesthesiologists perform the anesthesia. After surgery, the patient can return home, to the hotel with a friend, family member, or trained attendant, or can enter a plastic surgery recovery hotel.

Requirements

Dr. Alter follows the Standards of Care v. 7 issued by the WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health). The standards are established to ensure that you can provide fully informed consent and that you are prepared for the surgery. We must receive letters from two mental health professionals recommending you for Gender Confirming Surgery. Both mental health professionals providing an evaluation must be experienced in the field of gender dysphoria. At least one of the evaluating professionals must possess a doctoral degree, e.g., psychologist, psychiatrist. The other professional is required to have at least a Master’s Degree in psychology, counseling or social work. If both professionals are working in a team, one letter with two signatures is sufficient. For Chest Contouring (FTM) surgery, one letter from an evaluative mental health professional credentialed as any of the above is sufficient.
